Everything bagel compound butter is less a serious technique showcase and more a fun, genuinely tasty way to use a popular seasoning blend beyond just topping a bagel with it.
Everything Bagel Compound Butter
Prep time: 10 minutes, plus chilling | Makes: about 1 cup
Ingredients
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 3 tbsp everything bagel seasoning
- 2 oz cream cheese, softened (optional, for extra tang)
- Pinch of salt, to taste
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, mash the softened butter with a fork until smooth. If using cream cheese, mash it together with the butter until fully combined.
- Add the everything bagel seasoning and mix thoroughly until evenly distributed.
- Taste and add a pinch of salt if needed - the seasoning blend already contains a good amount, so this is often unnecessary.
- Spoon onto parchment paper or plastic wrap and roll into a log, twisting the ends to seal.
- Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before slicing, or freeze for longer storage.
Notes
Adding cream cheese leans this butter closer to the classic bagel-and-cream-cheese pairing, but it's entirely optional - the version without it is still good, just a bit less tangy.
Why This Combination Is Worth Making
Everything bagel seasoning - a mix of sesame seeds, poppy seeds, dried garlic, dried onion, and salt - is popular enough at this point that it shows up on all kinds of foods beyond bagels, and building it into a compound butter is a low-effort way to get that same flavor onto anything you'd melt butter over.
What to Use It On
- Spread on a bagel, obviously, but especially good on toast too
- Melted over roasted potatoes
- Stirred into scrambled eggs
- Spread on corn on the cob
- Melted over avocado toast in place of plain butter or oil
Variations
- Make your own seasoning: If you don't have a store-bought blend, combine equal parts white and black sesame seeds, poppy seeds, dried minced garlic, dried minced onion, and flaky salt.
- Extra savory: A tablespoon of finely grated Parmesan adds another layer of umami richness.
- Spicy version: A pinch of red pepper flakes mixed in gives this a bit of heat alongside the savory seasoning.
