Oat milk's creamy body makes it one of the better plant milks for a chai latte, standing up well against the black tea and warm spices without needing to be a strict 1:1 dairy substitute in flavor.
Oat Milk Chai Latte
Prep time: 5 minutes | Cook time: 8 minutes | Serves: 1
Ingredients
- 1 cup water
- 1 black tea bag, or 1 tbsp loose black tea
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon, or 1 cinnamon stick
- 4 whole cloves
- 3 green cardamom pods, lightly crushed
- 1 (1-inch) piece fresh ginger, sliced
- 3/4 cup oat milk, preferably barista-style
- 1 to 2 tsp honey or maple syrup, to taste
Instructions
- In a small saucepan, combine the water, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, and ginger. Bring to a simmer and let cook for 5 minutes to infuse.
- Add the tea bag or loose tea, remove from heat, and steep for 3 to 4 minutes.
- Strain the spiced tea into a mug.
- Warm the oat milk in a separate small saucepan or in the microwave until steaming but not boiling, then froth if desired using a milk frother or by whisking vigorously.
- Pour or spoon the warmed, frothed oat milk into the spiced tea.
- Sweeten with honey or maple syrup to taste.
Notes
Using a barista-style oat milk here helps avoid any splitting, since chai is often served quite hot and the spices add their own acidity to the mix.
Why This Combination Works
Chai's warm spice blend - cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, ginger - pairs naturally with oat milk's own mild, slightly sweet, oaty character, similar to how these same spices work well in oatmeal itself. It's a more complementary pairing than chai with a completely neutral milk.
Variations
- Iced version: Let the spiced tea cool completely, then pour over ice and top with cold oat milk.
- Stronger spice version: Increase the whole spices and let them steep longer for a more intense chai flavor.
- Dirty chai: Add a shot of espresso for a combined coffee-chai drink.
