Oat Milk Overnight Oats

A simple oat milk overnight oats recipe - a naturally complementary pairing and an easy make-ahead breakfast for the week.

Oat Milk Overnight Oats

Using oat milk to soak overnight oats is about as natural a pairing as exists in this whole guide - the milk you'd make from oats, soaking more oats overnight, is a genuinely complementary combination rather than just a convenient one.

Oat Milk Overnight Oats

Prep time: 5 minutes, plus overnight soaking | Serves: 1

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup oat milk
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds (optional, for thickness)
  • 1 tsp maple syrup or honey, to taste
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Toppings: fresh fruit, nuts, nut butter, or granola

Instructions

  1. In a jar or container with a lid, combine the oats, oat milk, chia seeds if using, sweetener, vanilla, and salt. Stir well.
  2. Cover and refrigerate overnight, or for at least 4 hours.
  3. In the morning, stir well - the mixture will have thickened considerably as the oats absorb the liquid.
  4. Add a splash of additional oat milk if you prefer a looser consistency, then top with fruit, nuts, or granola before serving.

Notes

This keeps well in the fridge for up to 4 days, making it a good make-ahead breakfast for the week.

Why This Pairing Works So Well

Oat milk's naturally mild, slightly oaty flavor doesn't compete with the oats it's soaking, and its creaminess (especially if you've made a slightly richer, thicker version at home) gives overnight oats a genuinely satisfying texture without needing dairy at all.

Variations

  • Chocolate version: Use chocolate oat milk in place of plain, and add a spoonful of cocoa powder for a dessert-like breakfast.
  • Peanut butter banana: Stir in a spoonful of peanut butter and top with sliced banana.
  • Berry version: Stir in a handful of mashed or whole berries before refrigerating for a naturally sweetened, fruity version.
  • Higher protein version: Stir in a scoop of protein powder along with a bit of extra oat milk to keep the consistency from becoming too thick.

Adjusting the Ratio

The 1:1.5 ratio of oats to liquid here (1/2 cup oats to 3/4 cup milk) gives a fairly thick, classic overnight oats texture. For a looser, more pourable consistency, increase the oat milk slightly; for a thicker, almost pudding-like texture, reduce it a bit or add more chia seeds.

This is one of the simplest, most repeatable ways to use oat milk daily. For more, see the complete oat milk guide.
